A Week with Abraham – Laying New Pipes

Abraham’s been using so many new analogies lately. This one really resonates with me. I’m often in my head, trying to figure things out. Trying to analyze the whats and whys and hows of my life. Trying to get to the bottom of things. But Abraham says it so often:

There is no bottom!

We just keep a vibration alive that isn’t serving us. That’s not to say that we can’t learn from our mistakes. I know we can. I often get insight moving forward as I recognize the thoughts and feelings that fueled the old vibration. It’s the needing to know, needing to figure it out that binds us there. It’s the fear of making the same mistakes that increases the probability that we will.

In this analogy, Abraham describes the pond and creek system that Jerry and Esther created on their property years ago. It’s a circular system with pumps and pipes to keep it aerated and keep the water constantly flowing. Water is pumped into the pond, out through the creek, and back again.

One day recently, Esther noticed the pond was getting mirky, so she had someone come out to inspect it. They tried putting in a new pump, etc, but finally determined that the pipes that return the water to the pond were clogged. They tried for several days to unclog them, then announced to Esther that it would make more sense to lay new pipes.

Can you see why this is such a great analogy!

We tend to spend so much time trying to unclog our pipes (our old thoughts and belief systems). When there’s a problem, we want to fix it, deal with the crap that clogged it in the first place. It seems neglectful to just leave it buried and lay new pipes, doesn’t it?

Yet knowing what we know about the Law of Attraction, it’s easy to see how focusing on the crap that clogged the pipes just attracts more crap.

Just lay new pipes!

It’s really that simple. Start telling a new story. Start talking about what you want and WHY you want it. Stop talking about what went wrong!

NEW PIPES = NEW THOUGHTS ABOUT A SUBJECT (or a new subject altogether) 

So how does this tie into what they’re teaching about momentum? It’s not easy and often not possible to change the direction of our thoughts once they get going. I think what Abraham would say to that is we need to let any strong momentum play out and not try to resist it. But once the dust has settled and we can look at our situation more objectively – that’s when we have a choice:

Try to fix what went wrong or simply LAY NEW PIPES!

My week spent with Abraham was so rich, so full of value. I can feel my power more now that I understand momentum. It offers me control – like my foot is truly on the gas pedal. The subtle changes in speed are perceptible as I lean into the momentum or pull back. I’ve never felt more deliberate!

As they spoke about momentum throughout the week, there were many times Abraham demonstrated the power of momentum by allowing someone into the hot seat who was bent on telling their negative story. Abraham’s response would be to kick them out (they’re doing it more and more lately – but in such a loving way) or distract them. I used to wonder why they always cut people off, didn’t let them talk. Now I know why. There’s absolutely no benefit in telling a story that isn’t serving them.

Recently Abraham has become even more witty, comedic – undoubtedly Jerry’s contribution. lol. When someone (Cancun, week one) began talking about a loved one on the “other side” Abraham began looking behind the blue drapes at the back of the stage. After a minute they explained that they were looking for the other side (The point being there is no other side). Often during week two, they would interrupt someone in the hot seat by pointing to something on the far side of the stage, saying, “Oh look…a squirrel.” Of course the audience would break into laughter and the occupant of the hot seat would get the point.

The point is…distraction is a powerful tool!

I’ve been applying this since I got back. Keeping things light and easy. Distracting myself before negative momentum gets going. My husband and I have been pointing out imaginary squirrels all week, and it never fails to get us laughing. (NOTE: if you want to see where this came from, watch the animated movie, UP. You can hear the dogs thoughts and how easily they’re distracted – it will also give you a visual, adding life to this delightful analogy).

It’s made me see how fickle we can be – not to mention lazy – when it comes to focus. We tend to live our lives unaware, helpless victims enslaved to a mind that has its own agenda. But that’s not the way it is at all! Once you get a whiff of the power that is available to you. OMG…it changes everything.

Abraham is using a lot of new terminology lately: vortex and grid (both concepts worthy of books with the same names) have been the theme of seminars for some time now. Lately I’m hearing terms such as momentum, spinning discs, laying new pipes (I’ll talk about that in another blog). People I’ve talked to are somewhat confused by the new terms – how they relate to earlier teaching and to each other. I have been a little, too, but this week gave me new clarity.

This is how I see it:

THOUGHT is attractive in nature ( which means it has the power to attract similar thoughts). As similar thoughts begin to assemble, they form a belief system which acts as a framework, or GRID, that continues to fill in with more like thoughts, ideas, inspirations, and eventually manifestations. Because of the creative power it holds, it’s helpful to see this grid as a SPINNING DISC, gaining MOMENTUM as it draws more to it. At any given time there are multiple discs spinning. How we feel determines which disc we are on. FOCUS allows us to choose (an easy process if we are aware and make the shift before the momentum gets too strong).

With a little practice, its easy to determine if the disc we are on is higher or lower on the Emotional Scale (a concept Abraham introduced years ago and can be read about in their book “Ask and it is Given”). Our ability to focus is the key. Paying attention to how our thoughts feel and exercising our ability to choose. Knowing too, that if we find ourselves on a disc that doesn’t feel good, we have the option to distract ourselves early on in the process.

UNCONDITIONAL JOY?

ImageWe often hear the term unconditional love. People assign different meanings to it. I’ve heard it used to describe God’s love for humanity, a parent’s love for a child. It’s frequently used in a charitable sense…loving someone or something when it isn’t easy or natural to do, because it’s the “right” thing to do.

Ultimately, it means to love regardless of conditions.

What it means to me is to love—to choose to be in the vibration of love—despite what’s going on around me. If I love simply because it feels good to be “in love,” I’m not being selfish in the negative sense of the word. I’m giving the greatest gift I can give anyone. To be in the vibration of love and then through deliberate focus, shine the light of that love on another person—not because they deserve it but because I deserve to feel good—that’s unconditional love.

So what about unconditional joy?

Is it possible? YES! Its all about choice, all about focus.

I’ve had to remind myself of that lately. I’ve let myself get caught up in conditions around me and gotten sloppy with my focus. I’ve been looking at “what is” and letting it dictate how I feel.

I know better than that.

So I’ve made the decision, again, to choose joy regardless of conditions—despite what’s on the news or talked about endlessly on Facebook; despite “what is” in my life, my bank account, my body…

PLEASE NOTE: Feeling someone else’s pain won’t help them; focusing on the negative won’t change it; noticing what you don’t want won’t bring about what you do.

The bottom line is you deserve to feel good!

Give yourself a break and take your focus off the television, off the news feed on Facebook, off what isn’t working in your life right now…and focus on something that feels good. Take a moment to look at what is working in your life and appreciate it!

Use your ability to focus. Find something to appreciate and hold your gaze there long enough to feel your vibration raise. Then shine the light of your joy on others. Smile at the harried cashier; hum as you finish your Christmas shopping; breathe deeply as you catch the afternoon sunset; take a long moment to appreciate your favorite pet; curl up with a hot chocolate and classic Christmas movie with your spouse, child, sibling, or friend. Let your joy spill out through your expressions, your words, your actions.

No one can rob us of our joy. When we don’t feel it, it’s simply because we’ve taken our eyes off it. This Christmas, give the greatest gift you can give anyone…give them the gift of your joy! 

WHY AFFIRMATIONS DON’T WORK

As I’m doing research for my latest novel, I’ve been reading about hypnosis, self-hypnosis, hypnotherapy, etc. One of the books I read called, Through the Open Door, Secrets to Self-Hypnosis, gave me some insight into why affirmations (for the most part) don’t work. The book explains that we have a barrier between our conscious and unconscious mind, a filter system that protects us from suggestions that may not be in our best interest.

“The anti-suggestive barrier is the part of the mind that ‘protects’ the unconscious from suggestions that seem to be dangerous…(however) this barrier does not always identify truly dangerous problems. It only repels what the mind has been conditioned to believe is dangerous. (It) rejects input…that is not consistent with what is already in the unconscious mind.”

This barrier is made up of three parts: logic, emotions, and ethics.

  • The logical barrier protects us from suggestions that don’t jive with our sense of logic.
  • The emotional barrier protects us from suggestions that may hinder our security or self-confidence.
  • The ethical barrier protects us from suggestions that go against our ethical beliefs or morals.

The goal then is to overcome or find resonance with these barriers to create inner harmony—thereby opening the unconscious mind to POSITIVE SUGGESTION. We can do that by constructing messages to ourselves that our unconscious mind will accept.

Of course the book is talking about self-hypnosis, so the person would be in a self-induced trance state when the suggestion is made, but I really believe this can also apply to what we tell ourselves on a daily basis.

With LOA teaching, we learn that we get what we expect, however expectation is a belief that lies primarily in our unconscious. That’s why there is so often a discrepancy between what we think we are thinking about (conscious desires) and what is coming to us (manifestations)

We have deeply rooted belief systems in our subconscious, forming a barrier that can negate conscious thoughts and affirmations. The good news is that when a statement does pass through into our unconscious mind it is immediately acted upon as truth and implemented into our experience.

Therefore when making affirmations:

  • Use statements of faith, which is certainty or knowledge that something is.  “I know that well-being flows and I am open to receive it.”
  • Use goal-directed language (words that imply the goal is becoming a reality)  “I am becoming more (clear, healthy, prosperous) all the time.”
  • Use present (or near future) tense. “I am content with what is and eager for more.” (Abraham-Hicks)
  •  Avoid statements that currently are not true (even though we’d like them to be)  “I have all the money I need.” I am perfectly healthy.”

For example, years ago I began saying, “I always get good parking spots.” I could feel the resistance around that. My logic barrier kept rejecting that statement because my experience had simply not proven it to be true. Then I took a different tactic. I suggested that since people are always coming and going (from the mall or any other busy venue) someone could be pulling out right now. That one got past my logic barrier and implemented a permanent deep-rooted belief that it’s easy to get a parking spot. Hence, I always get good parking spots

I use the same suggestion to get comfy seats at Starbucks. Works like a charm!

Money/abundance is an elusive desire for many people. We tend to use affirmations that get rejected such as, “I am abundant.” or “I have all the money I need.” or “Money is flowing to me.” Can’t you just hear the buzzer cutting you off before you even finish the statement? Again, that’s because our logic barrier rejects a statement that has no evidence to support it.

I’ve begun using statements such as: “Money is energy. (I believe that everything is made up of energy, so this statement gets past my barrier). Therefore, as energy it is constantly expanding, transforming, flowing, becoming. Because it is energy it naturally expands to fill any vessel that is open to receive it. 

The bottom line is to use affirmations/statements that have at least an element of truth that your mind will receive. Feel your way. If you make a statement that doesn’t feel good initially, it’s a waste of time to keep repeating it over and over. FInd a better one—one that will slip past the barriers of your unconscious mind.
